School and college days in one’s life are the most enjoyable and memorable days. I am sure that each one of us cherish those days and reminiscence. Those were carefree days and each one of us have our stories of mischief and share of fun.
After completing my tenth class I got admitted to a girl’s junior college in Kolkata. We tasted our first independence during that phase of life and as a result we became a bit adventurous. Many of us became very bold also. This is a story of the mischief played by some of my contemporaries during college.
Although it was a college where I did my plus two, it was no less strict than a school. The college authorities were very particular about the exit of the students after classes. The darwans were instructed not to allow anyone to leave the premises before 4 pm in the afternoon. If somebody was not having any class because of teacher’s absence or some other reason, then she was required to acquire a gate pass from the office before exit.
There were two gate keepers guarding the gate. Francis, the older one whom we called Francis da, was the kinder and lenient one. Nobody ever had a problem convincing him with reason and sneaking out without a gate pass. But the other one, a young and tall dark fellow with a haircut like Amitav Bacchan, was synonymous with the actor in his angry young man persona. He probably thought of himself as the superstar himself and had an attitude. Nobody could sneak out in his presence. We named him “Principal’s Pet”.
Some of my classmates had boyfriends and they were desperate to bunk classes. This man always stood as a villain in their way, guarding with utmost dedication. It was funny to watch those girls making futile efforts to escape from college. The guard probably used to enjoy his power of authority and never budged.
To every problem, there is a solution. So, the scheming girls found a plot to fool him at least for once.
Dipali had a plan to watch a movie at 3pm with her boyfriend. So, she brought Renu and Anita to the gate to help her escape. Both these girls started a heated conversation regarding out pass with the guard.
“Dada, please let me go out. I am not feeling well, “Anita started.
“No, I can’t let you go, moreover you don’t appear to be sick!” He said.
“No dada, I can faint anytime!” Said Anita.
“Go to the sick room and take rest, your parents will be called and they will take you home! How will you go home in this condition?” The pestering man tried to reason.
Renu broke her silence and said “I don’t have class, I will take her home, please let us go.” Reasoning and counter argument went on and the guard got distracted from keeping his eyes on the gate.
This was just the opportunity for Dipali which she took full advantage of. First she threw her bag over the gate which landed outside. She carefully looked around and quickly scaled the gate and ran. The plan was successful.
We heard about thieves resorting to such modus operandi but could never imagine college girls could be so bold to adopt something like this. But, it’s true that necessity is the mother of invention. We all noticed the sequence of events that unfolded but the guard was so engaged with quarrelling with the duo that it escaped his notice. He never realised that something like that had really happened. Everybody gossiped about this amusing incident but took care in preventing it from reaching the ears of the college management.
