Introduction :

Sweta and Samina belonged to the same profession, lived in different cities, met at a conference and became friends. They were unmarried, in their late twenties and loved life. They were of a generation that valued independence and were very fussy about keeping fit, both physically and emotionally. Samina loved her gym while Sweta was a passionate yoga follower. Both dated often, had male and female friends and were compulsive travellers.
taking trips around the world. This time they wanted to do the Europe cruise; ten days on water with short land bursts. They were meticulous planners and looked for deals more for fun and comfort, wanting to enjoy the well-spoken wining and dining attributes of such cruises.

Part 1

It was summer, requiring few coverings and both liked the sun on their shapely bodies. Such travels freed them of their societal adherences, literally. They let their long hairs down and enjoyed admiring looks and acceptable flirtations. They had synced their flight with the cruise take-off time and were the first on board. They shared a cabin with good, small balcony and enjoyed the greeting champagne with music and clicking pictures.

They had heard about the cruise as a small city on water and were thrilled to experience the elaborate pampering that the cruise promised. Their cabin – balcony, deck pools with Jacuzzi allowed them uninterrupted sun-bathing and both had decided to make most of it. Clothes unpacked and in their shorts, loose top and sandals, they set out to explore the ship and its programmed niceties. They visited the areas, looked over the swimming pools, the floating casinos and the rich entertainment zones.

Every time they would be on their own, there would be admiring smiles and inviting glances and pitches. Both exchanged notes, liked being noticed and looked forward to some fun. Men would be men. A few bold ones suggested meeting at the Singles gathering and wanted to trade phone numbers. The women kept the options open with a teasing, maybe.

In the liberal world of doing their own thing, the beautiful ladies were bound to receive, surprisingly, more indiscreet glances and suggestions from their own sex. And cruise was a free arena. At the early winding-up first night, they laughed over their conquests and thoroughly looked forward to the adventure.

Next day was all about swimming, sun-bathing and lots of over-eating. The evening was a formal affair of dining at a full-course restaurant, attended by a lovely East European woman and the special, made-to-order cuisine. The music and wine and the appreciative lingering from the tables around brought in extra warmth that the bottle of wine had triggered.

“I have an admirer, with an agenda”, giggled Samina , after they went to the cabin to change into casual skirt and top for the evening’s activities. “That blonde, polite and efficient table hostess, Eveline, has scribbled her number and name. What should I do?”

“Hmmm, call her up; what is the story with her?” getting into the fun of it, the slightly tipsy Sweta suggested, while doing up her light make-up for the night ahead.

“Hey, I’m not into girly-girly stuff. Oh sh-t, she’s already onto my phone. I must have given at the reservation counter. My-my, love sign and all!! She wants me to meet tonight as she gets free; she has given the ping of the cruise’s top rated “Blending Bar”. I’m definitely not going; don’t we have our plans?” A nervously excited Samina looked at her.

“Don’t be a pru-rude. Call her in for a hurried hi at the bar! Tell her there’s a week ahead for more, haha!” Said Sweta, enjoying her pal’s discomfort and feeling a bit left out.

Part 2

So while the two played the slot machines, Samina impatiently waited at the bar encounter. She looked as Sweta gave her a thumbs-up as she got up on receiving the “reached” message from Eveline.

The night wore on. Sweta hit a mini-jackpot and tried to call Samina but she was unreachable. Collecting her wins, she returned to the cabin. She wanted to wait but the wine had its final say in the matter. She slept till afternoon and woke up surprised at the done bed of Samina. Where had she been the whole night?

“I’m with Eveline at the sauna. She has worked out a good deal at the Spa for us. Join me, once you are awake. More later.”

The last two words stung her; she ought to be angry at Samina. Were they not together on this? Deep inside, she was afraid and did not want to discuss Eveline with Samina. She wanted her to be back the way she had always found her.

She looked across at the empty bed, missing her she was, as if she had lost her. Samina had a neat habit of laying out her clothes as she stepped out of bath. Today Sweta stared at the spread out clothes and searched for Samina’s missing heartbeats. She felt her personal things and was awakened to the acute physical needs, long unquestioned.

Samina was pleasantly surprised when Sweta greeted her at the spa with a warm, clinging hug. There was a swift, non-intrusive questioning of the previous evening with Eveline and Sweta did not pursue the matter. She shyly wanted her to be taken to that bar which Samina readily agreed. There was no further mention or seeing of Eveline.

The bar had all kinds ; novices like the two women and many intentional preys and predators. A few came only to satisfy their curiosity as same sex love was still a new thing. Reluctantly, after Samina’s ok, Sweta agreed to dance with a bold female, looking out for fun. This was a whole new world and she had to learn to feel more of this way. Before things advanced, Samina stepped in and claimed her.

The bar had many curiosities; private rooms and more risky permutations which Samina had glimpsed when she had come the previous evening with Eveline. Samina was now the guide to their strange initiations; the friendly, safe place was all about being yourself without inhibitions. And they enjoyed like the newly engaged; touching, entwining, sharing the new found magic.

And that night they started making love. Unrehearsed, unfamiliar, ecstatic but haunted by Sweta’s doubts of what really happened between Samina and Eveline.

Next day and the days after, they remained indoors, gazing at the open sea and their lives. They no longer needed the entertainment zones on the cruise ship nor any land site seeing; life for them was safely anchored in their arms.

“I am indebted to Eveline.” Samina spoke softly to Sweta.
“I don’t want to know.” Sweta replied, wanting to avoid the discussion of the existence of Eveline.
“That evening she gave me an insight of an outsider. She had seen us together, saw something we did not realise and acknowledge. At the bar, she made me see a world that I wanted us to be a part of. She made me speak about us, openly and gave me the confidence to approach you. I came to our room and wanted to wake you up, but seeing you lying, I snuggled up and declared my love for you. She is our true savior and we should thank her for bringing us together.”

All doubts were undone and the two stepped off from the cruise ship, embarking on their new journey together. At the exit, they were warmly received by Eveline who gifted them a picture of the two with her in-between. An outsider who blended their hearts.
