She stood leaning on the custom-made balcony railing, her silky soft arms complimenting the smooth white marble underneath. As the slightly moist wind carried with it the sound of the crashing waves, she gazed at the million stars in the velvety sky.

Another day had passed by. Just like the entire year had. And the one before that.

Two years, she sighed.

They were supposed to be the best two years of their life, the beginning of a wonderful marriage. And they had been in the history of her Facebook and Instagram accounts. Photos of the smiling couple in each others arms at all the exotic locations one could only dream of. He had to go around the world striking successful deals for his new business venture and he asked her to accompany him everywhere. She had been delighted at the very thought. She had spent the entire flight admiring him, hand in hand, as he dozed off due to the exhaustion of the previous few days.

“Sorry darling, but I was busy,” he had said.

Part 1

As they had landed, he was off for his first meeting, leaving her to unpack for them. She had wished him luck and he had kissed her goodbye. She had been humming a song the entire day as she indulged in the high-class services offered to her. A refreshing massage at the spa, a peaceful steam bath at the sauna and then reading a book by the pool side.

She couldn’t remember when she had dozed off. The cool evening breeze had awakened her and she quickly headed to her room worried about the number of missed calls or pending messages that would be awaiting her as she reached for her mobile. But there had been none. She checked the time, it was 7 already. When her call was disconnected by him, a worrying crease appeared on her forehead. She calmed down only after getting a message from him asking her to get ready for dinner.

“Sorry darling, but I was busy,” he had said.

She had chosen to wear the red dress he had gifted her the day they had decided to take things forward in their relationship. As she stepped down to meet him, his eyes had sparkled on seeing her. Her heart had skipped a beat as he kissed her on her blushing cheeks and complimented her. She had been waiting the entire day to be with him and here he was at last, looking as fresh as ever.

“Sorry darling, but I was busy,” he had said.

Holding her hand, he led her to the lounge. She was surprised when he took her to the huge table at the center. She would have preferred the cosy one for two at the corner of the lounge facing the pool outside. It was a lovely night after all. As she turned around to tell him that, she saw him shaking hands and introducing himself to the group of well suited gentleman who had arrived with elegantly dressed ladies by their side.

Oh, so this is a business dinner.

Slightly disappointed, she had put on her lovely smile and interacted with everyone graciously. The food was great but the conversation was not. But she stuck around long enough to make a lasting impression on his business associates and they envied him for being so lucky. As she headed back upstairs to their room, he had kissed her hand briefly and with a smile told her that he would join her soon. She later realised that ‘soon’ for him meant 2 or 3 in the morning.

“Sorry darling, but I was busy,” he had said.

As she saw him getting ready for yet another busy day, she admired him for his ambition and the hard work he was putting to fulfil his dreams. She kissed him goodbye and wished him luck again. The day went by as before. Then the next. And the one after that.

“Sorry darling, but I was busy,” he would say when he returned back every day.

It took her a week to ground herself in reality. She started going out and exploring the city all by herself. The selfie stick was helpful to capture the beauty of the places along with her smile aimed at her invisible husband. She started tagging him in all her photos and captioning it with how much she missed him there. Like a dutiful husband, he liked all of her pics at the end of each day and commented that he missed being with her too. She started writing a travelogue and it quickly became viral. The photos combined with her words won the hearts of many. Some even started sympathising with her and chided her husband for missing out on such a wonderful adventure with his wife. Few heated discussions later, she stopped tagging him and he stopped reading the posts.

Part 2

He continued to take her out on lavish dinners and introduced her to his new business contacts in every city they visited. He usually surprised her with a good morning kiss on her forehead as he prepared tea for her. She wished she could sleep in his arms a while longer each morning. She loved watching him get dressed, adjust his tie and fuss over his Armani suit before his glance met hers in the mirror. He would drop everything he was doing and give her a lingering kiss before heading out for the day. These were the special moments for her; the ones that she longed for every day. To spend a few more minutes with the man she loved the most.

“Sorry darling, but I was busy,” he would say.

She travelled all around the world with him for a year. He worked even on weekends and slept during the flights. The business boomed incredibly fast and he finally returned back to his homeland, filthy rich as he had always dreamt to be. She had been looking forward to being back home.

At last he would be my side now, she had thought, smiling at herself in the mirror. But to her dismay, the routine didn’t change much. The desires of both their hearts grew with time. He wanted a luxurious car and a bigger house for her, a better lifestyle, and a larger bank balance for their future. And all she wanted was him. Right then. In the present.

As she stood now waiting for him at the balcony, she knew it was time. The beautiful stillness of the night was frightening to her racing heart. She had battled with the thought for months. After one of their arguments about her thinking way too much because she was doing nothing else, she had started blogging full-time for some of the city’s most reputed businesses. Her time was equally divided between her work and the empty home that she returned to everyday. She had spoken to him about it, argued and pleaded even. She used his own jargon to get the message across, “Once every fortnight you have to come home early. Schedule it as your meeting with me. It’s not too much to ask for, right?” He had agreed to it but soon it became the only meeting he had to skip for the last six months. He always had one reply. She could almost hear the sound of his voice echoing the same old words, “Sorry darling, but I was busy.”

She heard his footsteps and turned around to face him even before he entered the mosaic balcony. This was his favourite part of the 10 crores apartment he bought a few months back in a posh society at one of Mumbai’s premium locations facing the sea. He had arranged for the top interior designer to create the house of his dreams and knew that the woman standing in front of him would make it his home. He had just struck a huge deal that he had been working on day and night for the last six months. Now he could think about starting a family with the love of his life. As he leaned over to kiss her, she turned her cheek to his lips.

Oh, she is in one of those moods again, he sighed. Lately he noticed that no matter how hard he tried, he just couldn’t keep the woman happy. He worked relentlessly to provide everything for her, took her to the most happening places, introduced her to all the high-profile people, built this heaven for her that cost him a fortune, yet she was always disappointed. He loved her dearly and could do everything to see her happy. But this was one depressed woman standing in front of him tonight.

“What now?” he asked.

“I am leaving. Forever.”

“What? What the hell are you talking about?”

“I can’t live here anymore.”

“Where do you think you will go?”

“Delhi,” she said. He just stood there seething with rage at this sudden turn of events. This was more than he could stand now. She had always been selfish about her needs, always demanding more time from him and asking him to go on holidays together or stay back from work on a whim just to pamper her more. He did everything he could for her. Heck, he even stopped sleeping for more than 5 hours everyday ever since he married her! And look at her now. Leaving him when he wanted to start a family with her.

“So, now that I have enough you have decided to show your true colour? You are after a meaty alimony right?”

He could see tears fill up her eyes as she said, “I got a job offer. I don’t want a single penny from you.”

He didn’t understand. What was wrong with her? Why was she so adamant to destroy a perfect relationship? He never expected anything in return for everything he did for her. He gave her full freedom to do whatever she wished to do, even if it meant publicly humiliating him through that ridiculous blog of hers. He was never the jealous kind either, and always encouraged her to spend more time with her friends outside home. What more could she want from a husband? He had loved her in every possible way in the last two years of their marriage and here she was ending it all.

“May I ask why?”

She looked at him, straight in his eyes. “I know we love each other a lot. I know that you work hard day and night to provide a better life for us. I know you respect me and are always trying your best to keep me happy. But…”

“But what? Isn’t that enough?”

It took all her courage to tell him what had been bothering her since the beginning of their relationship. She took a deep breath, held his hand in hers and said, “No, it’s not enough. I never wanted this luxurious life. I have told you so a thousand times before.” He cut in saying, “Well you sure don’t seem to mind spending my money for all this luxury, although you say that you never wanted this luxurious life.”

She left his hand and turned around to face the sea again. It was endless, just like their argument. He came and stood beside her. It took all her strength not to fall in his arms again and hope that he would change his ways. He loved her for sure, and she did too. But was love enough for a happy life?

“Go on,” he prompted, keeping his hands in his pockets to avoid the temptation of holding her face and kissing her worries away.

“We have had this argument again and again. Love isn’t enough for me anymore. I am tired of this empty marriage of ours. When I am happy and want to hug you, you are missing. When I am hurt and look for my hubby, you are never there. When I have some exciting news to share with you, I have to wait the entire day and hope that you come on time at night so that I can share my happiness with my soulmate. You are not there to wipe away my tears, nor to jump in joy with me or guide me or admire my efforts and pat my back for encouragement. I have to tell you everything after the moment is gone and it loses its charm. We are supposed to be soulmates, to share the ups and downs of our lives together, side by side. Why are you always missing from my side?”

“Sorry darling, but I was busy,” he said. “I was making a future for us.”

“And for that you sacrificed our present. I tried every thing to make this work for two years now. You will always have something more to achieve and believe me I really admire your passion for achieving your dreams. But you don’t realise that dreams get bigger day by day. And this will never stop. You will never be able to balance your priorities. I will always be left yearning for you amidst this luxurious life. You are never going to change. Our life will be this endless cycle of meaningless days. And that’s taking a toll on me. I just can’t do it anymore. I just can’t.”

“But I want to start a family with you now. A child will enrich your life and you won’t feel this emptiness anymore,” he said stroking her arm. She laughed on hearing his words and it startled him.

“I will have a child, but my husband will still be missing. I will still be as lonely as I am right now. I will become the child’s father and mother all by myself. Why do you expect me to do this for you when I can do it all by myself? If I want a child, I can adopt one and give it the same amount of love. My dear, you don’t understand. If you can’t handle the relationship with your wife, how do you expect to do so with your child? I don’t want my child to suffer as I have been suffering.” She sighed and then continued, “So, goodbye my love. I hope the very best for you as always.” With those words, she started walking away.

“I will try to change. Will spend more time with you from now onwards,” he offered hastily.

Without turning back, she asked, “How many times have you said that in the last two years?”

He looked at her unrelenting back and for the first time her determination scared him. This was it. She was really leaving him. He stood motionless amidst all his luxury and watched her walk away from his life.

Part 3

“Here you go my dear, I have changed her nappy and she is ready to be fed,” he said as he handed the fussy child back to his wife. She looked at him and love poured out of her eyes as she took the baby gently in her arms.

The news of her pregnancy had scared the daylights out of her. But she had decided to be a single mom and did not even share the news with him. She immersed herself in her work and in herself, no longer longing for something that she never had. She began to be at peace with herself and gradually her loneliness disappeared. As she stood in the one bedroom rented apartment neatly adorned with the classiest second hand furniture, she felt a deep sense of contentment for the first time in her life.

It took him six empty months to realise that life was meaningless if he didn’t have her by his side. The joy of achievement was missing from every successful deal he made after she had left him for good. He began to avoid late night PR activities and came home to an empty apartment, trying to find traces of her – the way she had arranged the pantry, or the colours she had picked up for their bedroom walls, the cushions that she had thrown at him in one of their arguments, the rosary through which she must have prayed a thousand times for his good health and success, the dressing table with her perfume bottles kept neatly beside the cosmetics and jewellery. He noticed how she had hardly used any of the expensive gifts he got for her. She had left everything behind. Even him.

One day he found himself staring in the mirror, eyes locked with his own. He noticed the wrinkles that had started appearing on his face now. Was he that old? Or were these the sign of the hectic life he had been leading for the past few years? Was it just a few years? It seemed like ages ago. What happened to him? Why couldn’t he remember the time he had last laughed heartily? Not the polite kind he did with his business associates, but the kind where his eyes welled up and his stomach hurt from laughing continuously. He used to do that before. A lot. Where were his college friends now, he wondered? Where was she?

He remembered how he had excused himself and secretly cried in the men’s room the day she had said ‘Yes’ to be his life partner. He never told anyone that. Not even her. In fact he never told her how much of an anchor she was in his crazy life. She kept him grounded, reminded him to call his family and relatives on special occasions, was always there to listen to him vent out the frustrations of a hectic day.

Why didn’t he ever listen to what she had to say? Why did he always assume that she was kept in a protective bubble that he was building for her? That she wouldn’t have to face what he was facing. No tensions. None of the disappointments of an unfulfilled partnership. He wanted to protect her from the world, and he ended up being the one who hurt her the most. She deserved better than that. Someone who appreciated what a blessing it was to have her by his side. Someone who gave her the most precious gift she ever asked for – his time. She had so much to offer and had asked for just one thing in return, love her back the way she did.

She used to complain before that they should spend more time together and get to know each other better. He realised how little he knew about her once he began his search. It took him weeks to track her down. And boy, was he in for the best surprise of his life.

Here he stood today. A responsible father of their child, a loving husband who had finally learned that life was about living in the moment, about spending your time and energy on things that bring you fulfilment and happiness. Here was one truly happy family at last.
