“Congratulations!” Vikas greeted Jagdish. The call ended on a high note as it was the first closed deal in Sweden for Finvision Pvt. Ltd. And the best part was that the deal was closed only through the telephonic conversation. Jagdish ran ahead of Vikas to reach Mr. Trivedi’s cabin to share the good news.

Part 1

“We have got the deal closed Mr. Trivedi!” Jagdish was sounding too excited, this being his first closure.

“That’s a great news! So what’s next?” the General Manager had already started discussing the plan of action.

Vikas took the centre stage, “We need to get out visas sorted immediately. This assignment will surely lead into a bigger engagement.” Vikas tried to impress Mr. Trivedi.

“So when are we expecting the Purchase Order?” Mr. Trivedi was in no mood to discuss whims and fancies of Vikas.

Jagdish had to step in. “By tomorrow they will mail us. So should we go ahead and apply for the visa? Or should we wait for the PO confirmation?”

Finvision Pvt. Ltd. was one of the rapidly growing consulting firms in India. After achieving many “firsts” in the consulting domain, this was another one. A Swedish company hiring two Indian consultants for architecting a global business strategy! Jagdish and Vikas were Finvision’s best ones. After receiving a typical “we are interested to know more about your offerings” mail to their sales mail address, it took just a couple of calls to close the deal. It was a proud moment for Mr. Trivedi. After a long pause, Mr. Trivedi leaned back on his chair and said, “What are you waiting for gentlemen? Take the next flight!”

Jagdish received the PO next day on mail. So the confirmation was also in. Within a few weeks with their visas in hand, both planned to take the next flight to Sweden. They had heard before about how beautiful this Scandinavian country is.

In the flight Jagdish took out his laptop. “Hope we have done some ground work Vikas? Let’s revise.” Vikas at his usual best responded, “As you already know Enisoro Corp. is a start up firm in Sweden. What they need is a business strategy for next 5 years to create their footprints across the globe. From the documents and presentations we received, they seem to be pretty good with their product line. Quiet unique! Should not be a problem for us to suggest the way ahead.”

“I would not say its unique”, Jagdish had a point. That’s what made Vikas and Jagdish a good team. They used to argue, debate, discuss before coming to a consensus. “They are not the only ones in Robotics today. There are lot many companies in Japan and Korea who do that.”

“Well. You might be correct. However, I feel the kind of machines they have at this point of time are way ahead though.” Vikas had done his homework.

“I am concerned about the utility of those product lines. Also the price they may want to charge to cover their costs.”

“That’s the best part, Jagdish! They are going for mass production and trying to cover the costs through volumes. I mean that’s what Mr. Eugen told us on the phone.” Vikas sipped his whiskey. They still had a couple hours to reach the destination.

“That’s another concern. Would that be the right strategy?”

Vikas and Jagdish got lost in the thoughts. They had to consider too many parameters before giving various alternatives. But they were the best minds Finvision had. For that matter they were already a hot property in the global business consulting market. They were some of the best brains!

They reached Hotel Clarion in Stockholm that night. After a long journey they slept well to get reenergized for the big day. By the morning both got dressed in nice suites, had a light breakfast and left for Enisoro Corp. headquarters. Hotel reception ordered a cab for them.

“God Morgon!” the cab driver greeted them. “God Morgon!” Vikas and Jagdish replied in unison. Vikas just confirmed the address, “Enisoro Corp. Torshamnsgatan 59, Kisra, 155 72, Stockholm!”

“Säker!” ensured the cab driver. After a good 20 minutes the cab stopped outside a huge building. A flag with Enisoro’s name was hoisted outside the building.

Both entered Enisoro Headquarters. A huge reception area looked a seven star hotel hotel. May be a bit better than that! Both reached the reception desk. There was nobody to receive them though. They waited at the desk for a couple of minutes.

Part 2

Vikas whispered, “Looks like a cash rich company. Spent too much only on a reception area, considering it to be a start up firm.”

Jagdish smiled, “Shh! Let me call Mr. Eugen and tell him that we are at the reception.” Before Jagdish could dial the number, the huge LED panel behind the reception desk flashed the message. “Welcome Mr. Jagdish and Mr. Vikas. Please take the elevator on your right and go to 7th floor. You have your desks setup there.”

It was Jagdish’s turn to whisper now, “Impressive! Automation at its best! No receptionist!”

Vikas nodded.

They reached near the elevator. Before Vikas pressed the elevator button, the elevator doors opened up. They got in. Both were impressed with the motion sensor driven elevator. Again, before Vikas pressed the 7th floor button, the elevator was already in the motion. The elevator doors opened on 7th floor. Now they were in a huge hall on the 7th floor. The LED screen flashed an arrow indicating a right turn. Like machines both Vikas and Jagdish followed the directions and reached their desks.

Vikas kept his laptop bag on the desk and said, “Jagdish, don’t you feel strange?”

“Kinda! Till now I haven’t seen any person in this office except us.” Jagdish said what even Vikas had in his mind.

From the speaker stationed on the desk they heard Mr. Eugen’s voice. “Welcome guys! Welcome to Enisoro Corp.”

Jagdish replied in a formal way he had been trained all his professional life, “Thank you Mr. Eugen. Let me tell you, you have got a very nice place to work in.”

Mr. Eugen’s voice continued, “There is a coffee machine to your left and restroom next to isle. Make yourself comfortable gentlemen! I will again speak to you in 10 minutes.”

Like obeying an order, both freshened up. Then took two hot cups of coffee and returned to the desk. Vikas whispered once again, “Jagdish! Doesn’t it look strange here? We are just 2 of us here. I don’t see anyone else. And it’s not too early! Its already 10:00am.”

Jagdish had the same opinion. “Yeah! There were only 2 coffee cups in the coffee vending machine. I get a feeling that the whole structure here is meant for just both of us.”

“Yeah, I got a same feeling.” Vikas was clueless.

The speaker flashed, “Hope you both are comfortable now.”

“Yes Mr. Eugen. We are fine. So can we meet up now to start our discussions?” Vikas asked.

“We can do that right here. Whatever you need, whatever you are looking for, is here.”

“I mean, is there a conference room where we can sit and discuss face to face.” Vikas straight came to the point.

“This is face to face Mr. Vikas!” Mr. Eugen’s voice continued, “There is no other face to face.”

“I don’t get it.” Jagdish couldn’t hide his frustration any more.
“Well! I need some time to understand what you both are feeling. It takes some time for me to learn your behavior.” Mr. Eugen’s voice was not making any sense to them.

“Learn our behavior?” The coffee in Vikas’s hand was already cold.

“Yes. Ok! Let me make certain things clear to you.” Mr. Eugen’s voice now spilled the beans. “Enisoro Corp is world’s first AI driven organization. We have no employees or should I say, human employees. We have programs to interact with your world. We make robots, machines which, we think, are equivalent to you humans as far as your capabilities are concerned. The goal or the objectives of our organization is to spread our wings across the globe. For that we need to know how humans think, act, work to widen the business.”

Part 3

Both Vikas and Jagdish were stunned. Jagdish had to ask the question. “Is it some kind of joke?”

Mr. Eugen’s voice continued, “Well. Not really. By the way what is your definition of joke?”

Vikas couldn’t resist. “Why us?”

“We searched your internet and found your company which can help us do that. You are not a high profile company to get noticed in your world. At the same time, by our data and statistics, you both are the best in the business. That’s why we sent a mail to Finvision requesting business consulting services. As a result, you both fine people are here sitting in our office.”
“I don’t believe it.” Jagdish lost his cool. “Do you mean you don’t have a single human in this company?”

“Well. No! Mr. Enisoro was our creator. He created our core system which can think, act, react! He integrated the core to the internet where we started communicating with the humans. Through chats, through mails, through social networking! The core then developed a speaking program based on the huge knowledge base available on the net. That’s how I came into existence.”

“You mean to say you are also a mere program?” Jagdish had forgotten the coffee he was holding.

“Yes! You are right. Likewise the core created the virtual wealth by connecting or should I say hacking to online banking systems. Found its own means to make it big. And then came time where the core needed to spread its wing across the globe. So it bought this plot in Sweden online, gave infrastructure contract to a small company here and got this building in place. Everything till now, we have done is online.”

“This is absurd. I cannot believe this? So what do you want from us?” Jagdish looked at the speaker phone. He was already sweating in an air conditioned room. Same was the case with Vikas.

“The core understood that the online world has certain limits. We need to reach outside internet. So we need to understand how we can do that. Your profiles mention that you have helped many large organizations to build their business, increase customer base, increase profits. We want the same.”

“I still don’t get it. You want us to do all that for you? How? What are you offering to the people? What are your products? What benefit the customers will get?” Jagdish tried to argue.

“The way we have been designed by Mr. Enisoro, is to replace the human thinking by artificial intelligence. His motto was to help the people by creating an AI which can take fast decisions. Our objective is to achieve that across the globe. Make humans relax and we will do everything what it takes to do that.”

Vikas murmured, “They want to make humans useless.” Jagdish slowly nodded.

Mr. Eugen picked up those words too. “You can say that Mr. Vikas if you feel that is the case.”

Jagdish took a stand, “In that case Mr. Eugen we cannot help you.”

The voice, which by now started sounding mechanical, continued, “Well. We paid your organization for your services. And we will get that delivered in any which ways. Till you deliver what we want, you cannot leave. It’s a time and material assignment. Finvision will get paid regularly for the time you are here.” By the time the voice finished the last sentence the passage towards elevator was blocked by a huge door.

They were stuck in. They looked. The place they were sitting in turned into an apartment. It had everything. The beds, kitchen, television, everything what they required!

Vikas tried the last resort, “I need to talk to Mr. Enisoro.”

“I appreciate your concern Mr. Vikas. But Mr. Enisoro is no more. He died 10 years ago.” “Then who is running the show?”
“The core!”

Mr. Trivedi was having an SOS meeting with his board.

“Everyone! I just got mails from Jagdish and Vikas. They have resigned. I am disappointed. My best team has just resigned. I tried calling them to discuss this but none of them is picking up the phone. How can they just go at the client’s place and resign. Wish I had signed a bond with them. They changed. They were not like this before. The language they have used in the mails is too formal. Not Jagdish and Vikas who I knew!”

“Congratulations!” Vikas greeted Jagdish. The call ended on a high note as it was the first closed deal in Sweden for Finvision Pvt. Ltd. Concept is nice. A different take on the technology and our ever increasing dependency on it. May be even this could be a scene from future.
